Let’s talk about your brain, the three-pound supercomputer that has been working 24/7 between your ears since before you were born. Your brain evolves as you get older, much like your favourite pair of jeans. But that doesn’t mean it needs to lose its shape.
The best part? It’s not about expensive pills or intricate regimens that keep your mind fresh; it’s about simple habits you do every day that pile up over time.
First, think of your brain as a muscle that needs to be worked out a lot to keep strong. But don’t play boring mental games unless you really like them. When you push yourself in ways that feel more like play than work, that’s when the real magic happens. Learn the words to a new song, go to the store a different way, or try brushing your teeth with your other hand. These small changes make your brain work harder and develop new neural pathways.
Your brain is also a bit of a foodie; it loves the excellent stuff.
Eat a lot of colourful fruits and vegetables (the brighter the better), fatty fish, almonds, and dark chocolate (yes, really). Drink enough water, too, because even slight dehydration might make you feel fuzzy. And even while that afternoon coffee might seem like a good idea, try not to let it keep you from getting good sleep. The truth is that nothing wakes up your brain like good sleep.
Let’s break a myth: your brain isn’t just “off” when you sleep.
It is actually doing important housekeeping, getting rid of pollutants and storing memories. Not getting enough sleep is like messing up your brain’s maintenance system. Try to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. If you need it, take a short power nap (your brain will thank you).
You can’t disregard movement as a way to strengthen your intellect.
You don’t have to train for a marathon. A brisk stroll every day will get your blood flowing to your brain and help you come up with new ideas. Stretching or gardening, even just a little, counts. The most important thing is to be consistent; think “often” instead of “intense.”
But maybe the best way to keep your brain healthy?
Your life with other people. Talking about important things, laughing with pals, and even having pleasant arguments are all great ways to exercise your brain that no crossword problem can match. On the other hand, being alone might be just as bad for your health as smoking. So, contact that friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with. You’re not only being social; you’re also taking care of your brain.
Lastly, take care of your stress like your life depended on it (because it does).
Stress that lasts for a long time can actually make your hippocampus, which is the part of your brain that controls memory, smaller. Find anything that helps you relax, like deep breathing, listening to music, or caressing your dog, and make it a must-do every day.
The best thing about brain health is that you may start at any age. Your brain may alter and expand, no matter how old you are. You can keep your mind sharp, your memory strong, and your curiosity alive for years to come by making small changes to your everyday routine. Please excuse me; I need to go learn how to juggle. My brain cells are waiting.
